William Holman Hunt The Afterglow in Egypt
location unknown
Date: 1854-1864?
"although the meridian glory of ancient Egypt has passed away, there is still poetic reflection of this in the aspect of life....It was the one illumination which I found to suit the subject in Nature - the strong second glow which comes in from the East when the sun has sunk a few minutes."
-Holman Hunt in a letter to Millais
Sir John Everett Millais Peace Concluded
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts
Date: 1856
This painting commemorates the end of the Crimean War. Each of the toy animals represent a country that was involved in the war. The last animal, that the girl is holding is the dove, signifying peace. The model for the woman in the painting was Millias's wife Effie. Unfortunately this picture doesn't show the frame of the painting, which is really quite interesting itself.
