Saint Eulalia
Tate Gallery, London
Media: oil on canvas
Date: 1885
(One of my favorites, and in my opinion Waterhouse's best work.) This painting depicts the falling of a heaven-sent shroud of snow for a martyred saint. The painting is powerful without showing anything magical for the miracle. The composition of this painting shows Waterhouse's mastery of technique. Saint Eulalia earned Waterhouse his election as anAssociate of the Royal Academy.
